Where does it go?
Why do we need to put stuff "away?"
This program teaches children that putting stuff in its proper place is the best way to keep the things that we have. When things are lost or ruined, they their value is erased. What we once prized is no longer there for us. Working with you and your children, we create appropriate spaces for their things, and give them a chance to make decisions about how they want to organize their lives, creating a sense of ownership and pride.
What can I do?
Children have a natural tendency to want to imitate their parents. They see their parents cooking, mowing and vacuuming, and look for opportunities to do the same. This is a perfect time to let them. But too often, we call chores “work” and make them seem unpleasant, when what we need to do is show children that working around the house is one of the ways we act in concert -as a family.
After examining the role of each family member, we create opportunities for children to perform various activities with their parents and with each other, while allowing them to provide input and take responsibility for aspects of the home and its care.
What time is it now?
Many children find it difficult to stop one activity and start another. What they need to learn is how to give each activity an allotment of time, and move on once it is over. All too often, they have to move from something they enjoy to something they do not - switch of the TV and turn on the homework. But how often do we let children decide how to arrange their time?
After working with you and your children to establish priorities, together we will help them decide where their time should be spent. Once they have an opportunity to make some decisions on their own, they begin to take ownership of the process, and it becomes second nature.
