Kids Just Me Couples Family

Kids

Ready, set, go to school!

  • Develop a rhythm of going through the backpacks and lunch boxes together right after school.
  • Have a place for your kids to put things from school or extra curricular activities that you need to review.
  • Use a family calendar placed in a spot for all to see. Distinguish each individual on the calendar with symbols or color coding, making sure that no one person is more prominent than another.
  • Teach your kids to set out clothing and supplies for next day the night before.
  • Avoid morning distractions in the "getting ready" process for the day. Do what needs to be done first - dressing and eating take priority. Then, if there is extra time, they can game-boy themselves out the door!
  • Get ready from head to toe before the kids get up. It is much easier to focus on helping them if you are already taken care of. What a positive example this sets for them as they grow!
  • Teach your kids how their choices result in natural consequences. If the desk is messy, it is harder to complete homework - more time is spent on getting settled than getting it done. That causes them to run out of time for other extras.

Play together, stay together

  • Create a clutter-free space for the family to do something together - games, television, reading or eating. You will be more likely to do that activity together if it is comfortable and ready to go.
  • Assign age appropriate responsibilities in the house for each child. Your consistency builds confidence and abilities not only in your role as a parent, but also for your kids.
  • Teach your kids to prioritize their activities and responsibilities. Explain how long each thing takes and how that fits in to the day. This adds more tools to their life skills tool box.
